Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology; Adjunct Professor of Immunology and Surgery

University of Washington

I am a medically (MB BS) and scientifically (PhD) qualified immunologist with a long history studying immune mechanisms in the liver, using both mouse models and human liver tissue slice culture. Research questions have included antigen presentation by diverse liver cell types and its impact on T cell tolerance; T cell mediated and innate immune mediated liver injury and fibrosis: the ontogeny and function of liver-resident macrophages (Kupffer cells); and our current active focus on the immunological consequences of the recruitment of local liver-resident cells in metastatic colon cancer. Our group is based in the TIME (Tumor Immune Micro-Environment) lab in the Department of Surgery, where basic scientists work alongside surgeon-scientists. This lab is an ideal setting for research in translational immunology.
